The Government has begun processes to amend the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759), to enhance the effectiveness of the institution of chieftaincy within Ghana’s governance framework.
The proposed amendment of the 17-year-old Act is expected to align the law with modern governance needs and better reflect current social and cultural dynamics. The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, disclosed this on Monday during a visit to the Bono Regional House of Chiefs in Sunyani.
The visit was part of the minister’s nationwide familiarisation tour aimed at strengthening engagement with traditional authorities and discussing key policy priorities. Mr Ibrahim has already visited the Greater Accra, Volta, and Upper West Regional Houses of Chiefs.
He noted that a committee had been constituted to undertake the amendment process, which is expected to commence within the 2026 calendar year. The proposed changes will address contemporary challenges, enhance institutional efficiency, and strengthen collaboration between traditional authorities and state institutions.
Describing the Bono Regional House of Chiefs as a “critical pillar in Ghana’s governance architecture,” Mr Ibrahim highlighted its central role in preserving culture, resolving disputes, maintaining peace, and promoting social cohesion in the region.
Acknowledging challenges faced by Regional Houses of Chiefs, particularly inadequate financial resources for adjudicating chieftaincy disputes and shortages of essential sub-professional staff, he revealed that the government had decided to increase the quarterly allocation to the Houses of Chiefs from GH¢30,000 to GH¢50,000, effective April 1, to support timely delivery of justice.
Touching on the 24-Hour Model Market initiative under the flagship 24-Hour Economy policy, Mr Ibrahim urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to collaborate closely with traditional authorities to ensure its success.
The leadership and members of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs welcomed the minister’s visit and commended the government for its commitment to chieftaincy reforms and regional development.
