Sunyani Municipal Assembly begins construction of 6 development projects

THE Sunyani Municipal Assembly has commenced the construction of six key development projects aimed at improving education, health, and water and sanitation services in selected communities across the municipality.

The projects, fully funded from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), are expected to ease infrastructural gaps and enhance the well-being of residents, especially in underserved localities.

Sod was cut on Thursday by the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Vincent Antwi Agyei, to begin work at Yawhima, Baakoniaba, Kurosua No. 2, Yamire, Tano Ano and Adomako.

All contractors are expected to complete the projects within eight months.

The interventions are anticipated to significantly expand access to essential services such as basic education and primary healthcare.

At Kurosua No. 2, a farming community, a CHPS compound with staff bungalows and a mechanised borehole is being constructed at a cost of GH¢1 million. When completed, the facility will serve residents of Kurosua No. 2 and adjoining communities who previously travelled several kilometres to access healthcare.

Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, Mr Antwi Agyei said the projects were informed by needs assessments conducted in the beneficiary communities. He noted that the government, under its “reset agenda,” remained committed to resolving infrastructural challenges confronting underserved areas within the municipality’s 34 electoral areas.

“We will not wait until the end of our administration before addressing your concerns. At that time, it will be too late for us,” he stated. He added that efforts to prioritise health and education infrastructure were critical to improving living standards in rural communities.

The Sunyani Municipal Director of Health Services, Dr Richard Adinkrah, welcomed the health projects, explaining that residents in communities such as Nanketewa, Dobo and Kurosua often relied on private facilities, which strained their finances while adding pressure to larger health centres in Sunyani.

At Yawhima, a three-unit classroom block for the African Faith Basic School JHS is being constructed at the cost of GH¢70,000. With a student population of 561, the school has lacked a dedicated JHS block, forcing learners to study under a dilapidated structure.

The Chief of Yawhima, Nana Ansu Ababio II, commended the government for the intervention and urged the contractor to ensure value for money. He further appealed for renovation and expansion of the community’s only clinic to meet its growing population.

Two additional educational facilities—a two-unit KG block for Abesim-Tano Ano M/A Basic School and a three-unit classroom block for Yamire—are also being undertaken under the Nkrankrom Electoral Area. The KG facility at Abesim-Tano Ano has deteriorated significantly, posing safety risks to the children.

The Member of Parliament for Sunyani East, Mr Mubarack Seid, assured that part of his MP’s Common Fund would be used to provide furniture for schools in the constituency.
