The Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, on Wednesday launched the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize in Accra, reaffirming the government’s unwavering commitment to improving the welfare and conditions of service of teachers, whom he described as central to the nation’s development.
This year’s celebration is on the theme “Elevating the Status of Teachers for Quality Education,” which underscores the need to recognise teachers as the foundation of Ghana’s human capital development.

Mr Iddrisu noted that annual recognition must be complemented with deliberate investments in affordable housing, improved welfare packages, and continuous professional development.
The Minister disclosed that discussions were far advanced with teacher unions and pension fund managers to establish a housing scheme that would enable teachers to own decent homes after years of service.
He further commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) for introducing transparent promotion processes and pledged government’s continued support for teachers’ welfare.
He stressed that no country could succeed without education, and at the heart of quality education were devoted and well-resourced teachers.
The Minister also appealed to corporate Ghana to scale up investment and sponsorship towards the Teacher Prize, emphasising that such contributions were vital in strengthening the country’s human capital.
“Your investment in our teachers is an investment in Ghana’s future,” he said.
The President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Rev. Isaac Owusu, applauded the government and stakeholders for their interventions to address challenges confronting teachers across the country.
He said despite constraints such as inadequate resources, heavy workload, and infrastructural deficits, teachers continued to remain resilient and committed to nation building.
Rev. Owusu acknowledged recent interventions by the Ministry of Education and the GES, including the payment of TV and data support allowances and the advertisement for promotions into higher ranks.
He urged the government to expedite such initiatives to further motivate teachers.
He reminded the gathering that teachers are the foundation upon which Ghana’s future is built, stressing that they play multiple roles as mentors, leaders, and community builders.
The Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Dr Christian Addai-Poku, also commended corporate partners for sustaining the initiative, which he said continued to motivate and celebrate Ghana’s teachers for their invaluable service to the nation.
Dr Christian expressed gratitude to the Minister of Education and his team for their strong support in mobilising resources for the programme.
“It also recognised the vital role of teacher unions, including GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT, and TEWU, whose contributions ensure that teachers are duly honoured,” he said.
