Teacher unions call off planned strike
A planned strike by the country’s teacher unions has been called off following an agreement with the Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, to resolve concerns over the placement of teachers on the appropriate salary scales.
The decision followed a meeting between the Minister and the leadership of the teacher unions on Monday, at which concrete measures were agreed to address the concerns and ensure that affected teachers received their rightful salaries.
Under the agreement, teachers will no longer be required to travel to their respective District Education Offices to submit payslips for salary-scale placement.
The new arrangement is expected to ease the burden on teachers and streamline the process of placing them on their appropriate salary scales.
As part of the measures, close to 80,000 teachers are expected to be appropriately placed on their correct salary scales.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) is to provide the requisite data to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to facilitate the necessary adjustments and payments to affected teachers.
The development follows concerns raised by the teacher unions over the placement of their members on the appropriate salary scales and their subsequent threat of industrial action to press for a resolution.
However, following assurances from the ministry and the measures agreed at the meeting, the unions agreed to call off the planned strike.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Ministry of Education expressed appreciation to the leadership of the teacher unions for their constructive engagement and commitment to resolving the matter.
It said the resolution was in the interest of Ghana’s education system and, particularly, the welfare of teachers.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to working with the unions and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that teachers received their rightful entitlements in a timely and efficient manner.
It also assured stakeholders of continued engagement with the teacher unions to address issues affecting teachers and promote industrial harmony in the education sector.
