TMA strengthens preparedness against floods, fires

THE Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has inaugurated its Metropolitan Disaster Management Committee under the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to strengthen disaster preparedness and emergency response within the metropolis.

The committee, chaired by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Ebi Bright, is expected to coordinate disaster prevention, mitigation and response efforts across Tema. The Metro Director of NADMO, Zenaibu Abdulai, will serve as secretary to the committee.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Tema on Friday, Ms Bright underscored the importance of proactive planning and inter-agency collaboration in tackling disasters such as flooding, fire outbreaks, industrial accidents and public health emergencies.

With the committee in place, residents of Tema are expected to benefit from improved disaster response coordination and enhanced community awareness initiatives.

She noted that Tema, as an industrial hub and host of the country’s premier seaport, requires a strong and responsive disaster management structure to safeguard lives, property and critical infrastructure.

The Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Dennis Nartey, urged members of the committee to discharge their duties with diligence and commitment.

He emphasised that effective disaster management depends on strong coordination among stakeholders, efficient early warning systems and continuous public education.

Mr Nartey further assured the assembly of the regional office’s support through capacity-building programmes, technical guidance and logistical assistance to ensure the committee functions effectively.

The Metropolitan Disaster Management Committee comprises representatives from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Navy, Ghana Health Service, other security agencies and key institutional heads within the metropolis.

The inauguration forms part of NADMO’s decentralised governance framework aimed at strengthening disaster risk reduction mechanisms at the metropolitan, municipal and district levels nationwide.

With the committee now in place, Tema is better positioned to prevent, mitigate, and respond to emergencies, safeguarding residents, industries, and critical infrastructure against disasters such as floods and fires.
