Trader gets 12 years for defiling 10-year-old girl

A Trader, who defiled a 10-year-old girl, has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by the Gender Based Violence Court in Accra.

Daniel Opoku Larbi, 46, charged with defilement, pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided by Dora Eshun, ordered the convict to pay compensation of GH¢5,400 to the victim, and also pay for the victim’s medical bills as soon as they were made available to the court.

Prosecution led by Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei told the court that the complainant, 33, was a hairdresser apprentice residing at Abeka, Accra.

The court heard that the victim, a pupil, was the daughter of the complainant.

Chief Insp Aniagyei said Larbi lived at Danfa, Accra, with the family.

The court heard that the victim’s paternal grandmother took her to stay with her at Danfa.

Chief Insp Aniagyei noted that Larbi was a brother-in-law to the victim’s grandmother, and they all lived in the same house.

The court heard that on May 15, 2022, the victim’s grandmother

and Larbi brought the victim to the complainant, complaining that the victim was being stubborn, and they could no longer accommodate her.

Chief Insp Aniagyei said the same day, after the grandmother and Larbi had left the complainant, the victim told the complainant that she was experiencing pains in her vagina.

The prosecution said when complainant quizzed the victim, she said that Larbi had sex with her on several occasions.

Chief Insp Aniagyei said the victim disclosed that during her first sexual encounter with accused, blood oozed from her vagina.

The court heard that Larbi asked the victim to use her pants to clean the blood after which accused collected the pant.

Prosecution said the complainant lodged complaint with the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police service in Accra.

Chief Insp Aniagyei said the police took the victim to the hospital where she was examined, treated and a report submitted on her. —GNA
