UEW launches 2025-2030 strategic plan
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has launched a new five-year corporate strategic plan (2025- 2030) to shape the cause and development of the institution in a competitive global educational environment with dwindling financial inflows.
Anchored on five thematic areas, the document was intricately woven into the fabric of the university’s vision to become an internationally reputable institution for teacher education and research.
The thematic areas include excellent standards in teaching, learning and research; proactive administrative system; access, equity and inclusion; financial and environmental sustainability and infrastructural development.
The new document succeeds the previous one (2019–2024), which management alluded had resulted in meaningful progress in academic quality, infrastructure development, research output and digital transformation.
It champions transparency in governance, demands accountability in performance, promotes inclusive growth that leaves no one behind and prioritises innovation as a driver of relevance and excellence in today’s dynamic world.
The Vice Chancellor of UEW, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, in his address, stated that the strategic document was in response to the call for transformation, saying, “It is grounded in the understanding that the future of education lies in innovation, adaptability and purposeful engagement with society.”
“As Ghana’s premier institution for teacher education, UEW bears a national responsibility—not only to prepare the next generation of educators but also to lead the charge in reimagining what education can and should be in the 21st century”, he indicated.
The document, he said, was a forward-looking blueprint that integrates lessons from the past, responds to present realities and anticipates future needs, noting that, “It sets out to deepen academic excellence, expand access, strengthen research and enhance institutional resilience.”
Prof. Mitchual further indicated that the plan reaffirms UEW’s mission to be a transformational force in education and national development driven by values of equity, integrity, innovation and service.
Giving a highlight of the document, he said, the university intends to enroll about 500 international students annually between 2025 and 2030, establish research centres of excellence such as expanding the Institute for Educational Research and Innovation Studies (IERIS) with dedicated funding of GH¢ 12.258 million by 2026.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, in a speech read on his behalf, indicated that the university’s strategic plan had come at a crucial time when education must be reimagined to meet the demands of the 21st century.
“I commend the leadership, faculty, and all stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to craft a plan that is not only ambitious but also deeply aligned with Ghana’s educational aspirations”, he said.
He noted that the educational vision of the current administration under President John Mahama aligns seamlessly with UEW’s 2025-2030 Corporate Strategic Plan, emphasising expanded access, quality enhancement and innovation in education.
“The President’s commitment to teacher training, digital transformation and STEM education resonates with UEW’s mission to modernise curricula, integrate technology into learning, and promote inclusivity”, he said.
The Managing Director of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Edward Ato Sarpong, who was the Chairman for the event, commended the management for the efforts they are making towards ensuring the transformation of the institution.
