The University of Ghana (UG), Legon, says it is investigating the death of a level 100 student, which occurred on Saturday.
The university said it was working with the police to establish the cause of death.
The student, identified as Nicholas Atteh, a Bachelor of Science in Administration, died around 16:40 hours while using the swimming pool at the University’s Sports Directorate.
A statement signed by Mrs Elizier T. Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director, Public Affairs Directorate of the university, copied the Ghana News Agency, said the family of the student had been notified and that the body had been deposited at the University Hospital, while investigations continued.
It said management of the university was mourning the tragic loss and sent deepest condolences to the family and friends of Atteh, on behalf of the entire university community.
The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the university also sent a message of condolence over the loss of Atteh.
A statement signed by the UG Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Executive Officers said: “With teary eyes and heavy hearts, the Students Representative Council of the University of Ghana announces the sad news of the demise of Nicholas Atteh, a Bachelor of Science in Administration student at the University of Ghana. The sad incident happened at the Legon Pool yesterday, Saturday, January 29, 2022.”
It extended condolence to the bereaved family. -GNA
