UJPLA demands responsible, balanced, peaceful coverage of AFCON 2025
The Union of Journalists of the African Free Press (UJPLA), a pan-African organisation of media professionals, has urged journalists to ensure responsible, balanced, and peaceful coverage of the 35th edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which kicked off in Morocco on Sunday.
The UJPLA, in a press statement issued on Sunday, noted that African journalists and media had the responsibility to promote the values of Pan-Africanism, friendship among people, and respect for others, combating hate speech, manipulation, and division.
The statement further said that the AFCON tournament must be viewed as a symbol of peace, mutual respect, and cohesion among African nations.
According to the statement, the tournament “is a powerful moment of unity, communion, and fraternity, a showcase of the African spirit, the vitality of its youth, its cultural diversity, and its capacity to come together around shared values.”
The UJPLA reaffirmed its confidence in the vitality, creativity, and commitment of the African youth, noting that, “These young people, passionate about sports, culture, and innovation, embody the future of the continent and must be at the heart of the dynamics of democracy, peace, and social progress.”
It also reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and the safety of journalists, and called on all stakeholders to ensure that the tournament in Morocco was celebrated based on the ideals of the founding fathers for an African confident in its destiny and focused on its future.
“The UJPLA encourages media coverage based on peace, solidarity, and openness, in close friendship and collaboration with all people and nations of the world, on the foundation of mutual respect, sovereignty, and equality among states,” the statement indicated.
The UJPLA, through the statement, further expressed gratitude to the Kingdom of Morocco and its people for the hospitality it had shown before and during the tournament.
