A vacancy has officially arisen in Ghana’s Parliament following a High Court ruling that ordered a rerun of the Kpandai Parliamentary election.
The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, formally notified the Electoral Commission of Ghana of the vacancy in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution. The vacancy resulted from a High Court decision in Tamale on November 24, 2025, which determined issues arising from a legal challenge to the previous polls.
The court case, numbered NR/TL/HC/E13/22/25, effectively nullifies the tenure of the current Member of Parliament for the Kpandai Constituency pending the conduct of fresh elections. In his notification, the Clerk stated, “In exercise of the power conferred and the duty imposed on the Clerk to Parliament by Article 112(5), I hereby formally notify you of the occurrence of a vacancy in the membership of Parliament.”
The declaration activates constitutional processes that require the Electoral Commission to organise a rerun of the parliamentary election in Kpandai. The development is expected to intensify political activity in the area, as both major political parties prepare to contest the seat once again.
Kpandai, located in the Northern Region, has historically been a highly contested constituency, and the upcoming rerun is likely to attract national attention. The Electoral Commission is expected to announce a roadmap for the rerun in accordance with electoral laws once it receives the formal communication.
