The Sunyani Municipal Assembly has given a two-week ultimatum to illegal occupants, including food vendors, pub operators, and other traders, to vacate the shoulders of the Sunyani–Abesim road to make way for the commencement of a major dualisation project.
According to the assembly, the directive was intended to facilitate the smooth execution of the 2.5-kilometre road expansion from Sunyani Senior High School to Abesim — a project considered critical to easing congestion and improving traffic flow within the municipality.
Over the years, unauthorised structures have sprung up along the stretch, some located as close as 10 metres from the Sunyani–Kumasi highway.
The encroachment has not only compromised safety but also contributed to traffic congestion, particularly during rush hours. The stretch frequently experiences heavy vehicular movement, with some drivers reportedly charging unauthorised fares or avoiding the route altogether due to delays.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in Sunyani yesterday, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Vincent Antwi Agyei, announced that work on the project would commence in the first week of March this year.
He described the intervention as urgent and stated that the contractor is expected to complete the project within one year.
The MCE emphasised that there would be no extension of the grace period and warned that structures belonging to persons who fail to comply with the directive would be demolished.
“By February 28, all affected structures must be removed to enable the contractor to move to site. There is no compensation to be paid to anyone whose structure will be demolished,” he emphasised.
He added that all affected persons had been engaged on the need to relocate and expressed the hope that they would cooperate fully with the assembly.
In a related development, work is also set to begin on a 1.5-kilometre dualisation from Adomako Junction to Watchman on the Sunyani–Ntotroso highway.
The MCE noted that the projects form part of the Sunyani inner and outer ring road initiatives under the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure programme, aimed at modernising road networks, improving urban mobility, and enhancing economic activity in the municipality.
