Varsity lecturers throw support behind Ex-President Mahama for President
A number of lecturers from the University of Ghana, University of Professional Studies (UPSA) and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) have publicly thrown their support behind former President John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming December general election.
They urged Ghanaians to reelect the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as President of Ghana.
Led by Professor Michael Kpessa Whyte, a political scientist and lecturer and Professor Nana Ama Klutse, the Head of Physics Department, all of the University of Ghana, about 35 other lecturers turned out on streets in Accra on Tuesday to share flyers containing pieces of information about John Mahama and the NDC, to motorists, passengers and other commuters at the Okponglo traffic light on the main University of Ghana-Madina road.
Some of the motorists cheered them on by singing and demonstrating the change sign.
Prof. Klutse told the Ghanaian Times that Ghana was at the cross roads and she believes former President Mahama was the right person to reset Ghana onto the path of progress and development.
Prof. Klutse said she relished another John Mahama presidency because she was enthused about his policies on science, technology and innovation.
She said the policy to train one million Ghanaians in coding was commendable.
Aside that, Prof. Klutse said she was of the considered view that former President Mahama understood the challenges confronting Ghanaians and was better placed to address them.
As a member of the NDC manifesto drafting committee, Professor Klutse said the NDC was determined to address illegal mining and restore forests and water bodies destroyed through illegal mining popularly called “galamsey” to its original state.
Prof. Klutse said the lecturers would engage students and the administrative staff when school reopens and encourage them to vote for former President Mahama based on his proven track record of prudent management of the economy and good governance, during his tenure as President from 2013-2017.
Prof. Whyte, who lectures public policy at the University of Ghana, said Ghanaians cannot have their lives mortgaged for few individuals.
“We think that evil triumph when good people sit and do nothing,” Prof. Whyte said.
He said he and his colleagues were unhappy about the corruption, incompetence and mismanagement under the watch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and as a group, they owed it a duty to speak against it.
Prof. Whyte said their campaign aimed to inform the electorate and diffuse the negative propaganda against the NDC.
