Volta Star @30: GBC unveils transformation agenda
The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) Volta Star in Ho has launched its 30th anniversary celebration with a comprehensive plan to retool the station for the next 50 years.
The initiative, aimed at strengthening the corporation’s effectiveness, has been submitted to the government for approval and consideration for recapitalisation.
Launching the anniversary on Friday on the theme: ‘30 Years of Impactful Broadcasting’, the Director-General of GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan, said the future of the corporation would focus on transforming its traditional sound radio services into a visual radio platform.
He explained that the transition was intended to meet the changing needs of audiences, enhance engagement and position GBC competitively in the evolving broadcasting landscape.
Prof. Alhassan observed that radio broadcasting had undergone significant transformation over the years, driven by technological advancement into the digital era, and said GBC would modernise its operations to meet public expectations at both national and regional levels.
He stressed that the transformation of the state broadcaster would go beyond upgrading equipment to include a change in the attitude of staff.
Prof. Alhassan urged workers to demonstrate commitment to the organisation, including ensuring the timely payment of basic operational costs such as electricity bills at the regional stations, and adopting a business-oriented approach in delivering services.
He further disclosed that efforts were underway to establish an autonomous GBC radio station at Akatsi in the Volta Region to cater for the unique needs of the people.
According to him, it was important for communities to take ownership of GBC stations in order to derive maximum benefit from them.
The Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Stephen Adom, commended the staff of Volta Star Radio for their professionalism over the years, particularly in educating the public on government policies and programmes.
He noted that despite stiff competition from private radio stations, Volta Star remained one of the leading stations in the region.
Mr Adom appealed to GBC management to recognise and honour both retired and current staff, including Mr Kwami Senyo and Mr Little Ben Vidzreku, as a way of motivating others.
The Director of GBC Volta Star Radio, Mr Franklin Agbenyo, also commended staff for their hard work and dedication, which he said had made the station a preferred choice for listeners within and beyond the region.
He said the station’s coverage extended to parts of the Eastern, Northern and Greater Accra regions, as well as neighbouring countries such as Togo, Benin and parts of Nigeria.
In support of the anniversary, the Ho Municipal Assembly donated GH¢5,000, while the Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu, pledged GH¢10,000.
