Vote against politicians for discontinuing projects – Okudzeto Ablakwa

Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament (MP) for South Tongu in the Volta Region, has asked the citizenry to shun ruling government politicians who discontinued projects of their predecessors.

“Leaders and politicians who engage in the act of abandoning existing government projects should be shunned which is my position on what has clearly become a canker is, politicians who discontinue projects of their predecessors should be shunned,” he bemoaned.

Mr Ablakwa revealed that there were no sanctions to governing leaders and politicians who abandoned government projects by their predecessors, hence provisions must be made with sanctions to culprits at all levels.

According to him, even though in the 1992 Constitution successive governments were enjoined to continue projects of their predecessors, it does not appear there was any sanction for governments and did not really comply with that, adding that “I think the time has come for us to put in place our legal regime, more stringent provisions and should come with sanctions at all levels”.

Mr Ablakwa noted that political leaders portrayed their selfishness with an agenda of legacy creation, however, overlooking the importance of the betterment of the living conditions of citizens.

“How do you explain? MMDCEs come to power and they want to have their own projects, they want to start afresh when they can use half of the money to complete the existing project, so it does not matter whether it is shared credit and you have Ministers of State who want to have their own footprint and own legacy and they will not continue the existing projects which beats my imagination,” he decried.

Mr Ablakwa contended that the pettiness of political leaders had led to the retardation of the economy because there was no commitment, determination and dedication and“if the E-blocks had been completed we will not have had double-track on our hands and double track is a clear result of lack of planning and lack of provision of infrastructure”.

He urged leaders from both the ruling and the opposition groups to desist from the acts of abandoning government projects since such acts retarded progress, growth and development of the country and impoverish the people. –myjoyonline.com
