Woman accused of stealing baby survives lynching
A 36-year-old Monica Nandara survived being lynched by an angry mob after she was accused of stealing a baby at Kakraba Junction, in Kasoa, in the Central Region.
Nandara, who was said to be offering help to a homeless woman and her baby, was accused of stealing the baby, by the homeless woman, triggering a mob action.
Reports indicate that on March 14, this year, Nandara, who owns a shop along the Nyanyano stretch and was into the production of pastry products, almost lost her life as the angry mob almost lynched her, accusing her of stealing a baby.
Some even suggested that she should be burnt to death to serve as a deterrent to others who have intentions of perpetrating similar crimes.
Nandara said she was working late in the night when she was informed by an apprentices that a woman and her baby were lying on the shoulder of the Nyanyano road.
According to Nandara, she decided to help the woman and her baby as it was late in the night.
Nandara said the woman indicated that she had been ejected from a kiosk she occupied by the owner for failing to pay rent.
Nandara indicated that she and one of her apprentices decided to take the woman back to the kiosk
and pay for the rent, but while driving to the venue, the woman shouted for help when they got to Kakraba, accusing her (Nandara) of attempting to steal her baby.
Nandara said this drew the attention of some persons, who attacked her and the apprentice and the vehicle, as the woman accused them (Nandara and apprentice) of attempting to steal the baby.
Nandara said while some of the angry mob physically attacked her and the apprentice, some suggested that they should be burnt to death.
Despite surviving the incident, Nandara told Citi News in an interview that she was traumatised and felt reluctant to offer help to people.
She condemned mob justice and called for more public sensitisation about how to deal with suspects.
The woman whose identity Nandara could not remember was handed over to the police, but the woman was later released.
The apprentice, Shivera Tiesar, who received slaps from the mob, condemned the mob action. —Citinewsroom
