MTN Ghana Foundation funds construction of library at Dansoman
The MTN Ghana Foundation is funding the construction of a library at Dansoman to facilitate Information Communication Technology (ICT)) and robotics education in the community.
Dubbed the Dansoman Community Library Project, it is being constructed at the Ebenezer Senior High School and estimated to cost GH 810,000.
The project, which started this month and would be completed in June, would not serve only the Ebenezer Senior High School, but the whole community and the over 20 schools in the Ablekuma West Municipality.
When completed, the project being constructed by an Accra-based construction firm, Wilfrim Enterprise would have a 100-seater capacity library, ICT and robotics centres with the capacity to accommodate 20 students each.
Senior Executives of MTN Ghana and MTN Ghana Foundation, and the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Ablekuma West Municipal Chief Executive, George Bray, the Board Chairman of Ebenezer Senior High School, Vincent Birch Freeman and the Headmaster, Kofi Mensah inspected progress of work on the project.
The Senior Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana, Samuel Koranteng said the construction of the facility followed an appeal by Mrs Owusu-Ekuful, who is the Member of Parliament (MP) to the MTN Ghana Foundation for a library facility for the school.
With promotion of ICT education being one of the core focus of the foundation, he said the Board of MTN Ghana Foundation approved to support the project.
Mr Koranteng explained that the intention of the foundation was to extend the project to other senior high schools across the country.
He explained that the foundation had contracted robotics experts to train students of the Ebenezer Senior High and interested members of the community in robotics.
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful in an interview commended MTN Ghana Foundation for financing the project.
She said ICT was the way to go in the current system of education.
The minister explained that the construction of the facility would help build the digital skills of the students and members of the community.
She said plans were far advanced to extend free wifi services across the country to help the students to research and surf the World Wide Web.
The minister entreated management of the school to rely on GIFEC and the Accra Digital Centre for ICT teachers and capacity building for the ICT teachers for the school.
The headmaster of the school, Mr Mensah said even though the school had an ICT facility it was obsolete and the books there were outdated, hence the need for a new ICT library for the school.
He appealed to MTN Ghana to help provide free wifi services for the school since the school has a telecommunication mast.
