4 institutions sign MoU for competency-based training in recycling technology

Four institutions yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to train learners in a new competency-based training programme in recycling technology.

It would allow students access to the composting and recycling plant sites of the Jospong Group to gain workplace experience in the field.

The four institutions are Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), Ghana TVET Service (GTVETS), German Development Agency (GIZ) and Jospong Group of Companies.

Spanning a 10-year period, the MoU that is under the “Pact for Skill: Support to the Transformation of the TVET System in Ghana,”and the Takoradi Technical Institute, Kumasi Technical Institute and Dabokpa Technical Institute are the beneficiaries.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Accra, the Director-General of the GTVETS, Dr Eric Kofi Adzroe, said the signing of the MoU and starting of the training was a big step towards bridging the gap between youth and the industry.

He stated that the project was crucial in providing students with hands-on experience, allowing them to develop practical skills to complement the theoretical knowledge they acquired in the classroom.

By gaining access to planting sites for practical training, he emphasied that students could apply “theoretical concepts” to real-world scenarios, enhancing their understanding of the field.

Moreover, DrAdzroe said having experiential learning from the plant sites of the Jospong Group would help students develop essential skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork, making them more industry-ready, increasing their employability and preparing them for the workforce.

“By combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience, students can develop a deeper understanding of their chosen field and make a smoother transition into their careers,”the GTVET’s DG elaborated.

The Group Head in Charge of Technical at Jospong Group, Mr Derrick KwabenaMintah, assured the CTVET, Ghana TVET Service and the Technical Institutes that their doors were opened at all times for all training sessions and other services.

“I must say that since the inception of the company, training has been one of our core duties for us to be able to train more people in the waste management sector,” he noted.

He said the company had plant sites in the region where the selected schools were located with well-trained staff who were willing to offer knowledge to learners.

A Representative of GIZ, a Senior Project Manager TVET, Mr Sebastian Wenz, indicated that GIZ facilitated the partnership between the Commission for TVET, the Ghana TVET Service, and the Jospong Group of Companies.

“So the MoU allows theTVET institutions under the Ghana TVET Service to send their CBTlearners onto the plant sites of the Jospong Group to gain some practical training which prepares them better for the job market after their graduation,”he explained.
