A diary of secondary and tertiary-cycle educational institutions established by the Muslim community in Ghana
In this article the second and third cycle educational institutions established by members of the Muslim community in Ghana is considered.
From the Gold Coast to the immediate post independent (1957) period of Ghana Muslim waged a political war to get government sponsored schools, in which the Quran and Arabic would be taught alongside secular subjects taught in Public and Christian Mission schools. But to no avail. In the interim their wards continued to attend public and Christian Mission Schools, while studying the Quran and Arabic privately to supplement their secular studies. As part of the developmental process they converted these Quranic Schools (Makarantas) into the Arabic-English schools that later served as the launch pad for the rapid development of typical Islamic institutions into Western type educational institutions in the country.
