Black Stars in Seoul Ahead of Friendly Against South Korea

The Black Stars departed Nagoya, Japan, on Saturday for Seoul, ahead of their second international friendly against South Korea scheduled for tomorrow.

This match follows Ghana’s 2-0 loss to Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup on Friday, during which midfielder Francis Abu sustained a serious injury. Coach Otto Addo traveled with a 21-man squad, adjusting for Abu’s absence.

The team will hold three training sessions in Seoul ahead of the match, an important part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

Squad and Debutants

Addo’s squad features a mix of experienced players and newcomers, including debutants Prince Kwabena Adu, Kojo Oppong Peprah, Caleb Yirenkyi, Kelvin Nkrumah, Prince Owusu, and Prince Osei Owusu. The team is focused on bouncing back from their defeat to Japan and building momentum ahead of next year’s World Cup, having secured qualification earlier this year.

Francis Abu’s Surgery and Rehabilitation

Following the injury, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), led by Dr. Prince Pambo, Black Stars Head of Medical, along with colleagues from Toulouse FC and the Japanese surgical team, confirmed that Abu successfully underwent surgery. The acute phase of his rehabilitation has now commenced.

A statement from the GFA noted that one physiotherapist will remain with Abu to assist with intensive physiotherapy sessions during this early phase of recovery. Plans are also in place for a senior member of the technical team to accompany him back to his home base in France once he is discharged from Toyota Memorial Hospital, where the surgery took place.

The GFA expressed gratitude to all involved, particularly the Black Stars management and technical team, for their support throughout Abu’s treatment. The association reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the midfielder returns to full fitness.
