The Member of Parliament (MP) for Dormaa East in the Bono Region, Racheal Ama Owusuaa, has expressed concern over the rising cases of teenage pregnancy linked to immoral behaviours among the youth in the district.
She described it as unacceptable as the situation where teenage girls, who should be in school or learning a skill, are getting pregnant through the influence of unscrupulous persons, thereby jeopardising their future.
The MP, therefore, called on parents and other stakeholders to take a keen interest in the social and moral activities of their adolescent girls.
Speaking at a durbar at Wamfie last Friday, Madam Owusuaa revealed that Dormaa East topped teenage pregnancy statistics released recently by the Bono Regional Health Directorate at its annual performance review in Sunyani, though she did not provide specific figures.
The first-time MP assured constituents of regular engagements through town hall meetings to account for her stewardship and gather concerns for redress.
She said she had allocated GH¢30,000 from her common fund to the District Education Directorate to organise mock examinations, and also distributed mathematical sets to this year’s BECE candidates.
The MP further disclosed that plans were underway to construct a modern hospital to augment the existing polyclinic, commending traditional leaders for releasing land for the project.
Chairman of the programme, Mansenhene of Wamfie Traditional Council, Nana Asamoah Kumtwie, commended the MP for her efforts, but urged her to consult the people on projects.
He also appealed for a pick-up for the police and improved telecommunication services in some communities within her constituency.
