Economy grows 4.7% in April • Services sector leads expansion

Ghana’s economy recorded a provisional year-on-year growth of 4.7 per cent in April 2026, with the services sector continuing to drive overall expansion, the latest Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG) released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has revealed.

The growth rate, however, slowed compared with the 7.4 per cent recorded in April 2025. Despite the moderation, economic activity remained resilient across the major sectors.

The report, released in Accra yesterday, showed that the MIEG index rose from 108.2 in April 2025 to 113.3 in April 2026, reflecting sustained improvement in economic activity.

Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, Government Statistician.

It also indicated that the index has maintained a steady upward trend over the past three years, increasing from 96.0 in April 2023 to 113.3 in April this year.

The services sector remained the largest contributor to growth, expanding by 6.0 per cent in April 2026, compared with a higher growth of 15.1 per cent recorded in the same period last year.

Although the pace of growth slowed, the sector accounted for 61.7 per cent of total economic expansion, supported largely by strong performance in the information and communication subsector.

The services index increased from 121.5 in April 2025 to 128.8 in April 2026, maintaining its upward trajectory.

The industry sector also recorded improved performance, growing by 4.0 per cent in April 2026, up from 1.1 per cent in April 2025.

The GSS attributed the stronger growth to increased mining activities, which helped the sector contribute 29.9 per cent to overall growth for the period.

The industry index rose from 112.2 in April last year to 116.7 in April 2026, signalling a continued recovery in production activities.

The agriculture sector rebounded after contracting in the same period last year. It grew by 1.7 per cent in April 2026, reversing the 6.9 per cent decline recorded in April 2025.

The recovery, the report noted, was driven mainly by improved performance in the crops and livestock subsector. Agriculture contributed 4.5 per cent to overall economic growth.

The agriculture index increased marginally from 77.6 in April 2025 to 78.9 in April 2026.

The report further indicated that net taxes accounted for 3.9 per cent of the total growth recorded during the period.

However, the GSS explained that month-on-month growth figures were not reported because the MIEG index is not seasonally adjusted.
