From trauma to recovery: Strengthening support for victims of torture – MEHSOG

THE Mental Health Society of Ghana (MEHSOG) is advocating a strengthened support system for victims of torture and ill-treatment.

In a statement copied The Ghanaian Times in Accra at the weekend to commemorate International Day of Victims of Torture, the society said victims of torture deserve, sympathy, compassion and love.

It said recovery was possible when the victims had access to rehabilitation centres and support systems.

“Indeed torture leaves lasting physical, psychological and social scars, but recovery is possible when the victims have access to compassionate, survivor-centred rehabilitation, justice, and community support,” the statement added.

According to the statement, every victim deserved to be treated with dignity, respect, and the opportunity to rebuild their life.

Through the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture (UNFVT), MEHSOG indicated that it remained committed to providing holistic support that promotes healing, restores hope, and empower victims to reclaim their lives

The statement further urged state institutions and individuals to uphold the human rights of victims, and ensure they receive the care, justice and the recognition they deserve.

“On this day, we call upon the government of Ghana, justice institutions, civil society and communities to uphold human rights, protect the dignity of every person, and ensure that victims receive the care, justice and recognition they deserve,” the statement explained.

It said protecting human dignity was a shared responsibility, and advised Ghanaians to respect the rights of all persons, especially those of the vulnerable and less privileged.

The statement added that, “A Ghana where every person’s rights are protected is a stronger, more just and more inclusive nation.”
