GLDA gets new board

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr Eric Opoku, has inaugurated a nine-member for the Grains and Legumes Development Authority (GLDA), tasking them to ensure the production of quality seeds, promote agricultural productivity, and enhance food security in the country.
Chaired by Dr Azumyarm Asako Joseph, the board has Assanaba Imoro, Dr Solomon Gyan Ansah, Lordson Sammor-Duah, Mohammed Issifu Pangabu, Donald A. AwintomaAdabre, Awuni Anaahu, Yakubu Abduli Hamid and Addai Amankwah David Kwame as members.
The swearing-in ceremony saw board members take the oath of office, pledging to uphold, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana while faithfully executing their responsibilities as members of the GLDA Board.
Speaking at the event, Mr Opoku highlighted the strategic importance of the authority in advancing the government’s agricultural agenda, particularly in grains and legumes, which formed the backbone of the country’s food supply.
The Minister emphasised that the board would play a critical role in ensuring that high-quality grains were produced, processed, and made available to both farmers and consumers.
“Your board is a key pillar in the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s efforts to enhance food security. You are expected to ensure the availability of quality grains at affordable prices while supporting farmers to maximise productivity,” the Minister stated.
He added that the board would also be instrumental in promoting value addition and creating avenues for sustainable agribusiness development.
The Minister expressed confidence that the board would collaborate effectively with the Ministry and other stakeholders to achieve measurable improvements in the country’s seed system and agricultural sector.
The Executive Secretary of the GLDA, Assanaba Imoro reiterated the authority’s mandate to produce foundation seeds derived from research institutions and private sector contributions.
He assured the Minister and attendees that the board would work diligently to ensure adequate supplies of high-quality foundation seeds for registered farmers across the country.
Mr Assanaba noted that the board’s work would directly contribute to the government’s agenda for national food sufficiency and agricultural development.
The inauguration marks a key step in strengthening the institutional framework for agricultural development in Ghana.
With the new board in place, the GLDA is expected to enhance seed quality, boost productivity, and support the government’s broader goals of ensuring sustainable food security and economic growth across the nation.
