The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has announced plans to provide households with separate waste bins to replace the open buckets used on waste collection tricycles, as part of efforts to improve sanitation across the country.
He said the government also planned to establish waste transfer stations across metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to improve the collection, transportation and disposal of waste.
Mr Ayariga said all MMDAs had been given 30 days to identify and submit proposals for one-acre sites for the construction of the transfer stations.
He said the initiative formed part of the government’s policy directive to develop an effective and efficient waste management system, beginning at the household level.
He was speaking at the National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise in Accra on Saturday, October 3, 2026, to commemorate World Cleanup Day 2026. Read More.
