Protect environment for future generations — Presby leader

The immediate past Presbytery Lay Representative of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) for the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions, Ms Nancy Arthur, has called for greater commitment to environmental protection, warning that unchecked human activities are putting the environment and the future of generations yet unborn at risk.
She said the increasing destruction of the environment, particularly through activities driven by the pursuit of wealth, required urgent and sustainable measures to restore and protect the ecosystem.
Ms Arthur made the call in her valedictory sermon at a thanksgiving service held at the Trinity Congregation of the PCG in Sunyani of the Bono Region to mark the end of her four-year service at the General Assembly, the highest decision-making body of the church.
Drawing lessons from Genesis 1:26-31 of the Bible, she urged Christians and the public to recognise their responsibility as stewards of God’s creation and protect the natural resources entrusted to humanity.
She expressed particular concern about activities such as illegal mining, which she said had resulted in the pollution of water bodies and the degradation of land.
Ms Arthur stressed that the pursuit of wealth should not be allowed to undermine the well-being of future generations.
“Let us not be a generation remembered for what we consumed and left behind in ruins, but a generation remembered for what we protected, restored, and passed on,” she underlined.
She also highlighted a healthy environment was essential to ensuring that future generations inherited a safe and sustainable world.
According to Ms Arthur, environmental stewardship required collective responsibility and deliberate action by individuals, communities, institutions and the government.
The well-attended service was attended by family members and other dignitaries who gathered to honour her for her service to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
Ms Arthur expressed gratitude to the national executives of the General Assembly, local church executives and the various ministries, particularly the Bono Ahafo Presbytery, for giving her the opportunity to serve at the General Assembly.
She said the experience and knowledge gained during her four-year tenure would enable her to contribute more effectively to the work of the local church in other capacities.
Ms Arthur also thanked her husband, Mr Twumasi Awuah, a former Municipal Chief Executive of Sunyani, her children and other family members for their support and sacrifices throughout her tenure.
