Sagnarigu MP donates 1,500 desks to GES
THE Member of Parliament (MP) for Sagnarigu Constituency in the Northern Region, Atta Issah, has presented 1,500 dual desks to the Sagnarigu Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to help address the furniture deficit in public basic schools.
The donation, which forms part of the first phase of his pledge to provide 5,000 desks to schools in the constituency, is aimed at creating a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
Presenting the furniture at a brief ceremony in Sagnarigu on Wednesday, Mr Issah said the intervention was part of his commitment to improving the quality of education and infrastructure in the municipality.
He said additional desks would be supplied by the end of the month to further reduce the furniture deficit confronting schools in the area.
Mr Issah said when he assumed office, the municipality had a furniture deficit of about 18,000 desks, compelling him to pledge to work towards eliminating the gap by the end of his four-year tenure.
He described education as the backbone of socio-economic development and said it was imperative for stakeholders to support efforts to provide children with the facilities needed to access quality education.
According to him, quality education remained one of the most effective tools for reducing poverty and improving the socio-economic wellbeing of the population.
He assured residents that he would continue to initiate interventions to improve educational infrastructure across the municipality.
Mr Issah, however, urged the GES and beneficiary schools to ensure the equitable distribution and responsible use of the furniture to maximise its benefits.
The Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Abdulai Imorow Gong, commended the MP for fulfilling his pledge and assured him of the Assembly’s continued collaboration to secure additional support for schools in the municipality.
He said the intervention was in line with the government’s reset agenda, particularly its efforts to strengthen key sectors such as education.
Mr Gong said the furniture would be distributed to schools facing severe shortages, particularly those where pupils were compelled to sit on the floor during lessons.
He noted that the MP, in collaboration with the Assembly, had over the past year supported the renovation and construction of a number of schools in the municipality.
Those interventions, he said, were contributing to improved educational infrastructure and academic performance.
Mr Gong assured the MP that the Assembly would work with school authorities to ensure that the furniture was properly maintained to prolong its lifespan.
The Sagnarigu Municipal Director of the GES, Chief Salifu Abdul-Razak, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiary schools, expressed appreciation to the MP for the gesture.
He assured Mr Issah that the schools would put the furniture to good use and ensure that it was properly maintained to serve pupils for a long time.
