SIGA DG supports Kewum Atrobinya community after rainstorm

THE Director General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Professor Michael Kpessah-Whyte, on Friday presented relief items to residents affected by a heavy rainstorm in the Kewum Atrobinya community in the Shai Osudoku District.

The items included 200 pieces of roofing sheets, 50 bags of rice, and 50 cartons each of canned fish, tinned tomatoes, 1000 bags of sachet water, and boxes of cooking oil.

The severe rainstorm ripped off the roofs of 53 structures, displacing more than 250 residents in the community.

Presenting the items, Prof. Kpessah-Whyte said he was deeply touched by the unfortunate incident and swiftly reached out to some colleagues to mobilise these items for the affected residents.

He explained that the visit was also to afford him the opportunity to assess the extent of the damage first-hand towards taking a firm decision on the quantum of support to give.

“These items are just my widow’s mite to ease your current situation. I am also here to obtain first-hand information on the extent of the damage, so that we can effectively mobilise additional support, as a native of this land,” he said.

The Director General assured the victims of his commitment to seeking further support from non-governmental organisations, corporate institutions, and philanthropists to help them rebuild their lives.

“As a son of the land, I will do everything possible to raise the needed resources to support and also liaise with the National Disaster Management Organisation to complement whatever assistance to give,” he added.

The Mankralo of Asutsuare, Nene Anyingmor Someh V, who received the items on behalf of the victims, commended Prof Kpessah-Whyte for the gesture, which he explained would give his people hope that they are not alone.

According to him, the disaster had brought untold hardships to the affected victims, but with the intervention, they would heave a sigh of relief knowing there were people out there who cared about them.
