TDC Ghana Limited has launched a special ground rent recovery exercise to retrieve over GH¢40 million owed by individuals and organisations within its operational areas.
The exercise, which began on Monday, targets industries, businesses, hotels, residential properties, churches, mosques, and schools that have defaulted in paying their ground rents.
The Managing Director of TDC Ghana Limited, Mr Courage Nunekpeku, warned that no debtor would be spared, stressing that the company was determined to recover all outstanding debts.
He said several companies and business entities had their premises locked up, while others made cash, cheque, or part payments to settle their indebtedness during the operation.
The exercise, led by Mr Nunekpeku, involved management members, the TDC Revenue Mobilisation Team, and security agencies, and was observed by journalists.
Mr Nunekpeku explained that the operation would continue until the end of the year, adding that churches, mosques, schools, and traditional religious bodies would not be exempted.
He disclosed that special enforcement exercises would also be carried out on Sundays at church premises to retrieve state funds.
“There are over 1,000 churches and several mosques within the enclave who are not paying ground rent. The law mandates us to collect these revenues on behalf of the state,” he stated.
Quoting the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921) and the Land Act, 2020, Mr Nunekpeku justified TDC’s authority to collect ground rents, warning that defaulters would face legal action.
Moreover, he noted that many defaulters often claimed landowners had travelled outside the jurisdiction, describing such excuses as unacceptable in this era of technology.
Mr Nunekpeku revealed that since the exercise began, TDC had successfully recovered over GH¢4 million.
