1 die, others injured in president’s convoy accident

One person died on the spot while others suffered varying degree of injuries when the convoy of Presi­dent Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo got involved in accident.

The accident was said to have occurred at Bunso in the East Akim Municipality of the Eastern Region while the President was returning from Kumasi to Accra after a series of activities in Kumasi over the weekend.

A statement issued in Accra, on Sunday, night and signed by the Director of Com­munications at the Presidency, Mr Eugene Arhin, however, said that the President was safe.

The statement gave the name of the de­ceased as Mr Kwesi Atta, one of the drivers of the presidential detail.

The Communications Director said that those who suffered injuries received initial treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital before being transported to the University of Ghana Medical Center for further treatment and observation.

“Tragically, one of the drivers, Mr Kwe­si Atta, has lost his life. Additionally, several close protection and police officers from the President’s security detail have sustained varying degrees of injuries, and received initial treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital,” the statement said.

“The injured persons are currently being evacuated to the University of Ghana Medi­cal Centre for further treatment and observa­tion. Several vehicles in the convoy have also been completely wrecked as a result of the accident,” it added.
