2 jailed 22 years for robbing bread seller
Two persons, including a physically-challenged,
who conspired to rob a bread seller at knifepoint, at Bantama in Kumasi, have
been sentenced to a total of 22 years imprisonment by a Kumasi circuit court.
Kwaku Gyasi, the physically-challenged, whose
disability hampered him from running away from the crime scene, was arrested,
and he identified the other accomplice, Emmanuel Teiko, whilst the third
accomplice, only named as Awudu, is on the run.
The two pleaded guilty to the charges of
conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery, and they were convicted on their own
pleas.
Kwaku Gyasi was jailed 10 years on both counts,
while Emmanuel Teiko also got 12 years on both counts. The sentences are to run
concurrently.
Chief Inspector Timothy Amoako told the court
the complainant, Comfort Agambille, was a resident of Santasi in Kumasi, and a
bread seller.
The court heard that the bread seller was
attacked after alighting from a vehicle at Bantama.
Chief Insp Amoako said the complainant was on
her way to a baker’s house to receive her daily supply of bread, when the
miscreants pulled a knife at her, and ordered her to surrender all that she had
on her.
Prosecution said when the victim handed over a polythene
containing ITEL phone, GH¢1,600 and a GH¢5 worth of bread, to accused, they
bolted.
Chief Insp Amoako said the complainant raised the
alarm, which attracted some residents, who pursued the accused.
The prosecution said the disabled, sought refuge
under a non-functioning school bus, parked in front of a house in the vicinity.
Chief Insp Amoako said some people saw the
disabled and arrested and handed him over to the Suntreso Police.
Prosecution said during police interrogation,
Gyasi mentioned the names of the other accomplices.
Chief Insp Amoako said Teiko was arrested at a
hideout by some community members, who found the stolen itel mobile phone in
his possession.
He said the two convicts led the police to the crime scene, where the sachet and its content was retrieved in a gutter at North Suntreso, but without the GH¢1600. – GNA
