The Abuakwa North Constituency in the Eastern Region has offered educational scholarships worth over GH¢75, 000 to 85 brilliant but needy tertiary students in the constituency.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency and Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Mrs Gifty Twum-Ampofo revealed that the scholarship was meant to support the beneficiaries to climb higher the educational ladder so that they would be useful to their families and the country in future.
She revealed this to the media during the “Meet the press” organised by the assembly here in Kukurantumi.
The meeting was aimed at updating the general public on government projects and programmes implemented within the municipality from 2018 to date.
She further revealed that there was the need to develop the human resource capacity of the country to take up the future mantle for development in the country.
“If we concentrate only on providing social amenities for the youth and refuse to build their capacity and develop them education wise then, who would take up the mantle when we leave.”
She stated that it was at the heart of the government that the youth received some formal and informal education adding that without proper education the country’s development and dreams would suffer.
“Last year, we offered over GH¢69,000 for 68 tertiary students who entered tertiary institutions and we hope to support them more to attain higher heights,” she revealed.
She stated that the scholarship committee selected the students devoid of political affiliations adding that various announcements on the scholarship scheme were made to the public in the constituency.
“They came for interviews with their parents and were shortlisted after which those who proved beyond doubt that they were needy but brilliant were offered the scholarships,” she added.
The MP revealed that several classroom blocks have been built, renovated and under construction to provide a good environment for pupils and students to study.
For his part, the Chief Executive Officer for the municipality, Mr Owusu Twum-Ampofo explained to the media that several government projects were being done in the education, health, governance, local economic development sectors among others in the municipality.

“There is also the completion and furnishing of a three-unit classroom block for Roses M/A Junior High School, construction of 3-unit classroom block for Ettukrom Methodist Primary School, and many others in the municipality.”
He stated that even though the municipality was just a year old it has been able to achieve a lot amidst inadequate office and residential accommodation and poor roads hoping that all challenges would be resolved to enable the assembly do more.
