C/R Boxing Fed. seeks sponsorship for Oguaa Afahye boxing championship
The Vice President of the Central Regional Boxing Federation (CRBF), Mr Francis Kingsley Arthur, has paid courtesy calls on the Saanahen of the Oguaa Traditional Area (OTA), Nana Kweku Yensu, and the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, Mr Ernest Arthur.
The purpose of the visit was to officially inform and seek their support for a special upcoming boxing championship to commemorate the Fetu Afahye festival of the chiefs and people of Oguaa.
Mr Arthur was accompanied by members of the CRBF and the Cape Coast Youth Development Association.
At both offices, the team presented CRBF branded Lacoste and Caps, and appealed to them and corporate bodies, philanthropists, and other business entities to come on board to support the event.
According to Mr Kingsley Arthur, it was important to support boxing in the region, adding that the upcoming championship would be one to revive the sport in the region.
According to him, “the Afahye Boxing Tournament” will pave the way for the federation’s vision to make boxing popular among the unemployed youth who can make a living out of it.”
“Boxing will flourish and make the youth very active when it is fully supported. What we need now is sponsorship to have regular competitions. We must move beyond the annual championships if we want to raise champions.”
Responding, the Nana Kweku Yensu, the Saanahen of the Oguaa Traditional Area, pledged to support the event because boxing has the potential to get the youth out of the ghettos and streets.
Nana Kweku Yensu, who doubles as Chief Executive Officer of Petram Fortsi & Sandock Martime Services, suggested the construction of a rehabilitation centre to care youth addicted to drugs and find a way to reintegrate them into the society.
The MCE on his part accepted the invitation and pledged to support the event which he believes when established in the Metropolis will lead to the discovery of talents and potentials world champions.
Four regions including the host Central Region will welcome the Greater Accra, Volta and Western regions in a round-robin championship with females, juvenile and regular boxers expected to be in attendance.
The championship is scheduled to take place on September 6 at London Brigde, Cape Coast and will be under the auspices of the National Sports Authority (NSA) and Cape Coast Youth Development Association and endorsed by the Oguaa Fetu Afahye @ 60 Planning Committee.
