
FISHERMEN at Dixcove in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region have kicked against plans by GoldCoast Resource Corporation to explore for gold offshore, saying the development could threaten their livelihoods and the marine environment.
According to the fishermen, the ocean is their traditional source of food and income and, therefore, decisions on its use must involve communities whose livelihoods depend on it.
They made their position known on Tuesday when Friends of the Nation (FON) engaged stakeholders at Dixcove to discuss the proposed exploration and its potential impact on fishing grounds, marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods.
The engagement was aimed at promoting the protection of Ghana’s ocean, the rights of fishermen and the sustainability of coastal livelihoods. Read More
