Ghana Water Limited shuts down Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the temporary shutdown of the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant due to unresolved contractual challenges and the prolonged lack of critical maintenance works required to ensure safe and efficient operations.

The plant, which has over the years provided treated water to communities along the eastern coastal corridor of Accra — including Teshie, Nungua, Spintex, parts of Sakumono, La, and adjoining areas — has been taken offline as part of measures to address operational setbacks that have affected its reliability.

A statement issued by the management of GWL and copied to The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday said the decision was necessary to protect the integrity of the facility and ensure public safety while discussions continued among key stakeholders to resolve the underlying contractual and technical concerns.

In the meantime, GWL said it had put in place contingency measures to minimise the impact of the shutdown on residents and businesses within the affected areas.

These include the rerouting of water from alternative treatment plants and prioritising the supply of water to essential service institutions such as hospitals, schools, and health centres.

“The company remains committed to delivering safe, reliable, and continuous water supply services to our cherished customers.
We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and wish to assure the public that engagements are ongoing to expedite the resolution of the matter and restore normal operations as soon as possible,”
the statement assured.

The management added that regular updates on progress and timelines for restoration would be communicated through GWL’s official website, social media channels, mainstream media, and community engagement representatives to keep the public adequately informed.

The Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant, commissioned in 2015, was designed to produce about 13 million gallons of potable water daily, augmenting supply to the fast-growing coastal settlements of the Greater Accra Region.

However, the facility has faced recurring operational and contractual difficulties, leading to intermittent shutdowns and concerns over sustainability.
