The General Manager of the James Town Fishing Harbour, Mr Stephen Owiah, has appealed to the government to extend the harbour’s breakwater to prevent waste carried in by the sea from entering the facility.
According to him, the short length of the breakwater allowed rubbish and other waste brought in by the waves to enter the harbour, making it difficult to keep the facility clean.
He said the situation created additional challenges for fishermen, fishmongers and other users of the harbour, while persistent siltation continued to disrupt fishing activities.
Mr Owiah made the appeal when the Ghana Agricultural and Rural Development Journalists Association (GARDJA), in collaboration with the Earth Journalism Network (EJN), organised a sensitisation workshop for fisherfolk at James Town in Accra.
The activity formed part of GARDJA’s six-month “Save Our Sea” (SOS) campaign, being implemented with support from the EJN to promote sustainable fishing and the protection of Ghana’s marine resources. Read More
