NCCE receives dustbins from NGO to support environmental cleanliness in schools

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has taken delivery of 40 litter bins from the One Ghana Movement, a non-governmental organisation, to assist its environmental campaign for a cleaner Ghana in various schools.

The gesture, under the Movement’s ‘Adopt-a-bin project’ is expected to aid the Commission in its drive to imbibe the culture of proper waste disposal and segregation among pupils in the Greater Accra Region.

Receiving the bins, Chairperson of the NCCE, Ms Josephine Nkrumah said the Commission found in the NGO a “worthy partner” as it had in recent times demonstrated good faith with the ideals and vision of the NCCE.

“The Movement have proven to understand our mandate and share in our vision. They have not only partnered with us on our environmental sensitisation programmes but have sponsored our latest activities to curb vigilantism, promote strong institutions and strengthen our electoral systems,” she noted.

Ms Nkrumah in expressing gratitude to the organisation for the donation assured that the bins would be put into proper use to ensure that the younger generation was capable of saving the country from its sanitation crisis.

“We have been engaging children in various schools in the region under our Citizenship Week programmes on the culture of waste disposal and segregation and we will ensure that these bins go to carefully selected schools that show commitment to waste separation.

We want to change the attitudes where we dump everything and anything anywhere and we believe starting with the children is the way to go to encourage good sanitation practices and build a bright future for the country,” he said.

The Chairperson further appealed to corporate institutions to assist the Commission in carrying out its duties expressing hope that the gesture “is the beginning of more things we can do together to make the country a better place”.

Executive Secretary of the One Ghana Movement, Emily Kanyir Nyuur, urged Ghanaians to come on board in adopting a right attitude towards the environment.

“We keep complaining that the environmental situation gets worse by the day but what are we as individuals doing about it? It behoves on us all to begin to change our behaviour towards the environment,” she advised.

Ms Nyuur lauded the NCCE for its resolve to improve a high sense of nationalism among citizens especially on its renewed efforts at tackling insanitary conditions in the country through sensitising basic school pupils.

“If we are able to inculcate in the young ones the right ways of handling waste, it will go a long way to improve present conditions,” she stated.
