‘Nurses, midwives must be multi-tasking’

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, has called for the training of nurses and midwives who can function in all aspects of their profession.

According to Dr Kuma-Aboagye, nurses were the bedrock of the healthcare delivery system and that, they always were at the forefront of ensuring the provision of requisite healthcare delivery services.

He said on Friday at the matriculation of 273 students of the Nursing and Midwifery Training College of the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

The students comprised of 167 Registered General Nursing and 106 Registered Midwifery students. There were also a total of 19 soldiers representing seven per cent of the total number of new students.

The ceremony was held on the theme; ‘Quality nursing and midwifery education: the bedrock of an effective and efficient healthcare delivery.’

He said the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economies and health sectors of most countries were still dire and required nurses and midwives who would live up to the demands of the profession.

“The training of quality nurses requires well-trained tutors with requisite qualifications, well equipped skills laboratories and adequate infrastructure,” Dr Kuma-Aboagye stated.

He urged the students to take their training serious, study hard and show maximum interest in the clinical areas to ensure they benefitted from the training given to them.

The Acting Principal of the College, Major B.A Addae, said the school’s skills laboratories for both registered general nursing and registered midwifery had been fully furnished with medical equipment.

He said the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission required the college to have a hospital-like setting in various laboratories for the purposes of demonstration otherwise institutional re-accreditation was impossible, hence the outdooring of refurnished skills laboratories.

He also called the building of hostel facilities, an assembly and lecture halls to accommodate the growing population of the college.

Maj Addae called on the matriculants to be discipline, learn hard and eschew bad behaviour
