Papase Church of Christ donates clothes, cash to Nsawam Female Prison
The Papase Church of Christ in the Ga West Municipality has donated more than 200 pieces of assorted clothing and an undisclosed amount of money to the female section of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison to support the welfare of inmates.
The items, which included assorted clothes, were presented to the female inmates at the prison in Nsawam over the weekend as part of the church’s efforts to extend assistance to vulnerable people in society.
Presenting the items, the Preacher of Nsumia Church of Christ, Evangelist, Edward Boakye, said the gesture was intended to help improve the living conditions of the inmates and supplement the support provided by the government.
He described the donation as the church’s “widow’s mite” towards supporting the inmates, stressing that even though the contribution might appear modest, it was made with genuine concern and compassion.
Evan Boakye said supporting people in prison was a biblical injunction, recalling the teaching of Jesus Christ that emphasised the importance of visiting and caring for people in prison.
He explained that the mission of the church extended beyond the spiritual upliftment of society to addressing the physical and material needs of vulnerable people.
According to him, the church considered it a responsibility to identify people and institutions in need of support and contribute in whatever way possible to improve their wellbeing.
Evan Boakye assured the inmates that they had not been forgotten or abandoned by the church and society, adding that the church would continue to support the weak and vulnerable whenever the opportunity arose.
He also encouraged the inmates to use their time in prison positively by embracing reformation and avoiding negative attitudes and behaviours that could hinder their successful reintegration into society.
Evan Boakye urged them to take advantage of rehabilitation and other opportunities available to them to acquire skills and develop positive attitudes before completing their sentences.
Receiving the items on behalf of the female section, the Chaplain of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, Sergeant Grace Saaba, expressed appreciation to the Papase Church of Christ for the gesture.
Sergeant Saaba said the supplies would go a long way to complement what the government provided for the inmates, noting that continued support from churches, organisations and individuals was important in meeting some of their needs.
She therefore appealed to other churches, corporate bodies and benevolent organisations to emulate the gesture by supporting the prison authorities and inmates.
Sgt Baaba said such interventions not only provided material assistance but also gave inmates a sense of belonging, hope and encouragement as they worked towards rehabilitation and eventual reintegration into society.
