Police in the Upper West Region on Saturday shot and killed a suspected armed robber at Busa, in the Wa municipality of the Upper West Region.
The incident occurred when the police attempted to prevent the deceased and two others from attacking and robbing road users, at a section of the Wa-Busa road in the early hours of Saturday.
Deputy Police Commander for the Region, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Peter Ndekugri, confirmed the story to journalists at Wa.
He said when the police rushed to the scene, the armed robbers opened fire on the security personnel, compelling them ( police) to fire back, resulting in the death of one of the robbers.
DSP Ndekugri said: “One of the robbers was hit by a bullet and died instantly whereas the others escaped into a nearby bush”, leaving behind three cartridges.
He stated that the deceased had been deposited at the Wa Municipal Hospital morgue for autopsy, preservation and identification.
ACP Ndekugri appealed to residents to volunteer information to assist the police to arrest the two suspects who escaped.
He said: “I want to sound a word of caution to armed robbers that we will take the fight to them without fear or panic. We will weed them out completely from society.”
ACP Ndekugri advised the public to comply with instructions of armed robbers when they (public) are attacked in order to save their lives.
He appealed to individuals and organisations to support the police with motorcycles and logistics, to enable them to arrest criminals.
