The Accra Regional Police Command has recovered GH¢140,000 and an AK-47 assault rifle following an armed robbery attack on a mobile money vendor at Lashibi that left one suspected robber dead and another on the run.
The stolen cash was abandoned by the fleeing suspect after his alleged accomplice was shot dead. The victim escaped unhurt.
A statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs of the Accra Regional Police Command, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, said the incident occurred on Friday when the victim was returning home with a bag containing GH¢140,000.
Preliminary investigations indicate that two armed men on a motorbike attacked the victim and allegedly fired at his vehicle, damaging the right rear tyre and front windscreen before making away with the cash.
According to the police, the suspects attempted to escape on the motorbike after the robbery. However, the complainant fired at them, killing one of the suspects instantly.
The second suspect fled, abandoning the bag containing the stolen money, which was later recovered by the police.
A search of the deceased suspect led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of live ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.
Police also retrieved five spent AK-47 shells and two spent pistol shells from the crime scene.
The body has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The police said investigations were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect and appealed to the public to provide information by reporting to the nearest police station or calling emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring public safety.
