Children must be constantly reminded of the fundamental human rights and responsibilities to serve as a guide to their development, the Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education(NCCE)at Krowor in Accra, Mrs Wilhelmina Adu-Asamoah has said.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the Citizenship Week celebrations at the St. Peter’s Anglican School in Nungua, she said educating students on their rights as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution would ensure they grow to become responsible citizens.

“We must remind young people of the human rights as well as the need to protect and defend the Constitution of Ghana in order to become responsible adults,” she stated.

“Every year we visit schools to remind young people of the fundamental human rights as it is always important to catch them young and give them the knowledge they need as they grow to become adults,” she stressed.

She urged the pupils to remain deciplined and tolerant in school and become great persons in society.

This year’s Citizenship Week celebrations which started from May 26 and would end on June 2, is under the theme “30 years of consolidating constitutional democracy and building a national cohesion:the role of the youth.”

According to Mrs Adu-Asamoah, they were targeting over 8000 basic schools across the country as they needed to empower children to appreciate the dividends of democratic governance and as agents of change, their roles in national development.

“We need to inculcate in the children, the value of accountability, make them ambassadors of peace among their peers, increase the awareness on the need for peaceful coexistence and instill attitudes that would promote patriotism,” she said.

She added that, the public must be clothed in the Ghanaian identity, stay united and disciplined to sustain democratic gains.

Children were presented with copies of the 1992 Constitution and encouraged to study and use same as guide as they develop to become future leaders.

The Headmistress at the St.Peter’s Anglican 2 Junior High School(JHS), Madam Susan Sena Gudu expressed appreciation to the NCCE officials for the education as it would go a long way to enlighten the pupils as far as their rights and responsibilities were concerned.

She said, they would continue with the education and encouraged other schools in the area to make teaching of the Constitution a priority in their quest to train responsible citizens.
