Senior Military Officers urged to drive institutional transformation

The maiden Chief of the Defence Staff’s (CDS) Generals’ Seminar of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) ended in Accra yesterday with a call on senior military officers to become agents of institutional transformation.

The three-day seminar, which commenced on Tuesday, September 28, was held on the theme: ‘Adaptive Leadership in a Complex Security Environment: The Role of Generals in Shaping Ghana’s Future.’

It brought together senior military officers from the Ghana Army, Ghana Navy and Ghana Air Force to deliberate on emerging security challenges and the leadership approaches required to address them.

Addressing the closing ceremony, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, said Ghana’s evolving security environment demanded adaptive leadership, innovation and strategic foresight from the military’s senior leadership.

He said the future effectiveness of the GAF would depend largely on generals translating strategic vision into practical policies, improved operational standards and decisive leadership across their respective commands.

Lt Gen Agyapong noted that a vision without strategic policy initiatives to achieve its objectives was meaningless, and urged the participants to move away from routine approaches and embrace positive institutional change.

He said the convention had strengthened professional competence, encouraged strategic reflection and reinforced the relationships necessary for effective military leadership.

The CDS said discussions on national security, diplomacy, ethical leadership, strategic communications and post-retirement life had broadened the participants’ understanding of contemporary military responsibilities and the changing demands on senior officers.

Lt Gen Agyapong further stressed that military success was determined long before operations commenced, through adequate preparation, continuous education, discipline, effective planning and sound leadership.

He therefore urged the generals to translate the lessons and insights gained from the seminar into concrete decisions, professional standards and leadership practices capable of strengthening the military institution.

The CDS commended the Chief of the Naval Staff and his team for the meticulous organisation of the inaugural convention, describing it as a benchmark for future editions.

He also expressed appreciation to the participating officers for their commitment to the programme and urged them to return to their respective commands with renewed purpose, courage, humility and professionalism.

Lt Gen Agyapong said the convention should mark the beginning of a new era of collaboration, accountability and excellence within the Armed Forces.
