Volta remains central to govt’s development agenda – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the development of the Volta Region, identifying youth employment, support for women entrepreneurs and regional economic collaboration as key priorities.

The Chief of Staff, Dr Julius Debrah, who represented the President as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2026 Te Za (festival) celebration of the chiefs and people of the Asogli Traditional Area in Ho, said the President would have loved to attend but was away on official duty.

He gave an assurance that he would convey to the President concerns about job opportunities for the youth, funding for women entrepreneurs and recommendations from a broader economic forum led by Togbe Afede.

Dr Debrah said the government would explore avenues for collaboration with chiefs and other stakeholders to promote development in the Volta Region.

He added that Ghana’s continued development could not be achieved in isolation, stressing that unity of purpose was essential.

He assured the people of the Volta Region that the area remained central to the government’s development agenda.

Dr Debrah also commended the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, for his leadership and practical approach to development.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, described the theme for the celebration, “United in Purpose, investing in people and infrastructure for sustainable national development,” as transformative.

She said community and national development required collective commitment and sustained investment in people and infrastructure.

Ms Gomashie attributed the apparent unity between the government and the people of the Volta Region to the efforts of Dr Debrah, adding that “we can only build upon what we have”.

She urged the youth of Asogli to remain united, protect the peace in the area, take pride in their identity and make effective use of investments and infrastructure to help build a sustainable Ghana that would benefit all.

The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli Traditional Area, Togbe Afede XIV, called on Ghanaians to uphold honesty and respect for the truth, describing them as essential to winning the fight against corruption.

He also declared his support for anti-corruption efforts under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.

Togbe Afede said the Attorney-General, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and other agencies mandated to investigate and prosecute economic crimes needed the support of Ghanaians to succeed.

The paramount chief commended the government’s development agenda, particularly the Big Push initiative.

He also thanked the President for his position on reparative justice for colonialism and slavery, describing him as a true African leader.
