2 killed, 13 injured in Nchiraa yam festival clash
TWO people have been killed and 13 others, including a police officer, injured in violent clashes that erupted during the celebration of the Nchiraa Yam Festival in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region on Saturday.
The Bono Regional Police Command said the incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m., shortly after the festival had ended.
In a statement, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, said preliminary investigations indicated that the disturbances began when the Chief of Nchiraa, Nana Tabiri Yaw II, and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the chief’s palace.
According to the statement, two people died in the ensuing confusion, while 13 others, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and were receiving treatment at a hospital.
The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation.
The Police Command said no arrests had been made so far, but intensified patrols had been deployed in Nchiraa to prevent possible reprisal attacks and further escalation.
It assured residents that efforts were underway to identify and arrest those involved, and urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
