2nd Deputy Speaker urges Ghanaians to deepen democracy, good governance

The Second Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, Mr Andrew Asiamah Amoako, has appealed to Ghanaians to collectively deepen democracy and good governance towards national development.

He called on individuals, including traditional rulers, corporate institutions and other stakeholders to protect the 1992 Constitution.

Mr Asiamah said “even though the country’s constitutional rule may have some flaws and challenges, it is better than dictatorship and military rule.”

He said: “there is the need to safeguard the constitution and sustain it. We should improve to advance democracy and good governance for the development of the country so that we will be able to match other countries who have had successful constitutional rule.”

Mr Amoako, who is also Member of Parliament (MP) of Fomena Constituency, made the call when he led an entourage of parliamentarians, who paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, at the Yiadom Hwedie Palace, in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, last Friday.

The visit was part of activities slated to celebrate 30 years of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy, under the Fourth Republic of Ghana, on the theme: “Thirty years of parliamentary democracy under the Fourth Republic: The journey thus far.”

Mr Asiamah noted that the foundation of democratic governance was parliament, made up of representatives from all constituencies in the country, who make laws for the citizenry to obey among other duties.

“Since we approved the constitution in 1992, we have had 30 years of uninterrupted rule and this is worthy to celebrate, considering the country’s history of military rule and dictatorship,” he noted.

Mr Asiamah said such a milestone has brought with it several achievements to the country, and deserved to be celebrated across all regions in the country to create awareness among Ghanaians.

He urged Ghanaians to continue to appreciate the constitution and democratic governance they have and help to protect while they strive to attain national development.

The Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, expressed appreciation to the parliamentarians for decentralising the celebration and not centralising it in Accra.

He also commended the MPs for their hard work to ensure an uninterrupted rule for 30 years and for advancing democratic governance in the country.

As part of the 30th anniversary celebration, the Parliamentarians, members of institutions and the security services organised a peace walk and sporting activities aimed at promoting wellness and good health among staff, stakeholders and the citizenry on Saturday, August 12, 2023.
