Chief Imam commends Hajj Board, urges continuous improvement

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has praised the Hajj Board, chaired by Alhaji Abdul Rauf Ibrahim Tanko, for what he described as the successful organisation and management of Ghanaian pilgrims to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj.
He, however, cautioned the board against complacency, urging members to build on the gains made so far.
According to him, excellence should not be mistaken for perfection, explaining that it remains a continuous and humbling process that allows room for improvement.
The Chief Imam made these remarks in a statement issued and signed by his personal assistant, Dr Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo.
He also expressed appreciation to the government for its support, which he noted contributed significantly to the smooth organisation and facilitation of the pilgrimage.
Sheikh Sharubutu further described the successful organisation of the Hajj as a shared responsibility that goes beyond political and ethnic lines. In that regard, he appealed to Ghanaian Muslims to celebrate the occasion in unity.
He observed that in modern times, the Hajj had evolved beyond a purely spiritual exercise, noting that it now served as an important avenue for bilateral relations and cultural diplomacy.
The Chief Imam also urged Ghanaian pilgrims to conduct themselves as ambassadors of decency, humility, stability and unity, in order to enhance Ghana’s image on the international stage.
More than 6,000 Ghanaian pilgrims took part in this year’s Hajj, with departures from the Accra and Tamale international airports beginning on May 1, 2026.
The pilgrims are expected to return home between June 12 and June 24, 2026, with 16 flights scheduled to airlift them from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The return arrangements were announced by the Pilgrims Affairs Office of Ghana.
Pilgrims have also been directed to comply with a strict baggage allowance of 46 kilogrammes, split into two bags of not more than 23 kilogrammes each, excluding hand luggage.
