The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has praised the United States Peace Corps for its 65-year contribution to Ghana’s development, particularly in education, describing its volunteers as important ambassadors who have strengthened ties between Ghana and the United States.
He said Ghana did not take for granted the sacrifices of volunteers who left the comfort of the United States to serve in deprived communities, many of which lacked electricity, water and other basic amenities when the programme began in 1961.
Speaking at a ceremony in Accra on Thursday to mark 65 years of Peace Corps service and partnership with Ghana, Mr Iddrisu said the country, the first to welcome Peace Corps volunteers, had built an enduring partnership with the United States under the vision of former US President John F. Kennedy and Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
