End attacks on Adwoa Safo – PNC pleads

The People’s National Convention (PNC), has expressed discomfort and ‘persecution’ of Sarah Adwoa Safo, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya in the Greater Accra Region.

It called for an end to the attacks on her in the media and pledged to stand with her every step of the way.

MsSafo, who has travelled outside the country, has come under a lot of flak over her continued absence from Parliament.

In a statement signed and issued by Janet Asana Nabla, the General Secretary of PNC, said the MP was being victimised, through acts and pronouncements by some leading members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) which was unfortunate and untenable.

It said it was unacceptable that another Ghanaian woman was being undermined, abused, discriminated against and other citizens werenot sympathising with her but looking on as she was being lambasted.

The statement said what was happening to Ms Safo was persecution, discriminatory, gender-biased, and violation of the constitutional rights of womanhood in the country which was unacceptable and should be discontinued and allow her to overcome the challenges she was facing by empathising with her.

“The PNC finds it baffling suggestions she should be removed from Parliament, when her male colleagues who found themselves in a similar situation are untouched and we urge the citizenry, gender-based organisations, and the media to stand against injustices to women and critically look into her issue to help her overcome the problems rather than castigating her for refusing to attend parliamentary proceedings.

“We also appeal to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is a human rights activist and a Gender Ambassador to critically look into MsSafo’s case and bring an amicable solution to it so that members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party and a section of citizens will stop bastardising her for no apparent reasons,” the statement said. -GNA
