An escort convoy of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) protecting civilians has come under attack at Bazua, a community in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region, leaving three civilians dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred on yesterday morning when the convoy, transporting about 140 civilians from Bawku to Bolgatanga, was ambushed by unidentified gunmen who opened fire multiple times.
According to a press release issued by the GAF in Accra yesterday, the troops returned fire and successfully repelled the attack. In the ensuing exchange, seven of the assailants were killed.
The statement added that one civilian sustained injuries during the attack and is currently receiving medical attention.
In a follow-up operation, troops pursuing the attackers retrieved a G3 automatic rifle, two fully loaded magazines, and 176 rounds of additional ammunition from a suspect who reportedly fled into a mosque.
Ten suspects have since been arrested and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
The GAF has cautioned the public against engaging military personnel during operations, stressing that such actions could have fatal consequences.
It also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in the Bawku enclave, where security forces have been deployed to maintain peace and protect civilians amid ongoing tensions.
Security analysts believe that the attack may be linked to the protracted Bawku conflict involving the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups, which continues to fuel sporadic violence in the area.
The latest incident has heightened tensions in Bawku, with reports of sporadic gunfire in parts of the township, even as police assure residents of efforts to restore calm.
The attack comes barely a week after a similar shooting along the Bolgatanga–Bawku highway, which left a businesswoman dead and three others injured, with the perpetrators still at large.
