Ghana pip Senegal in U-20 AFCON in Egypt

Ghana’s U-20 team, the Black Satellites defeated Senegal 1-0, thanks to an early first-half goal from Emmanuel Mensah at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025.
The game burst into life right from the start, with Ghana earning a corner and nearly scoring in the first minute, as Aziz Issah came close.
Senegal had their first opportunity in the sixth minute, but Satellites’ goalkeeper, Gidios Aseako, made a good save.
The contest evened out between the 10th and 20th minutes, but it was Ghana who struck first. Emmanuel Mensah found the net in the 15th minute after a pass from striker Jerry Afriyie.
The Senegalese briefly protested the goal, but the referee let it stand.
The Satellites will round off their Group C campaign with a match against the Central African Republic who lost 1-3 to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Group’s earlier fixture of the day.
Following the win, Ghana coach, Desmond Ofei, in his post-match remarks, commended his players for their tactical discipline: “It was a very difficult game, no doubt about that,” he said, “But tactically, I believe we got it right.”
Ofei acknowledged the physical nature of the Senegalese side: “Senegal came at us with a very direct and physical approach. It wasn’t easy, but our players showed great tactical discipline and fighting spirit throughout the game.”
Looking ahead, Coach Ofei emphasised Ghana’s ambition: “Our main goal is to qualify for the World Cup. That’s the focus. Each match and positive result take us a step closer.”
On the upcoming fixture, he added: “We know the game against the Central African Republic will be difficult. But just like today, we’ll fight, prepare well, and give our best.” –Ghanafa.org
